Instagram Collaboration exhibit
I have never met any of you face to face so I’d like to give you a short bio: My name is Chet Griffith. I live and work in Kenosha Wisconsin. I own and operate a little shop/art gallery called ArtWorks. If you want to see it you can go here: http://www.artworkskenosha.com. We have been actively serving the local arts community here for almost 9 years. The Plan: Part 1-We hosted a collaborative art show here in my gallery a few months ago. The results were very interesting. Some collaborating artists were able to produce cohesive, beautiful work, others were spectacular failures. I actually found the failures to be the most intriguing. You could almost feel the tension in the art. Differences of philosophy, style, or working methodology clashing right before your eyes. As artists we recognize the struggle, we’ve all been there. The amazing thing was that each artist owned up to it and learned a little something about themselves during the process. It was an exciting show. Part 2- The world of social media is fascinating. You all participate in it at some level so I don’t need to explain how we willingly suspend the real world for this “new digital reality” where follows and likes are drivers for popularity and self worth. Since I’m a little older than most of you I remember the ancient times (before the internet) and the societal changes that have occurred are mind boggling. So why not combine these two things? I want to host a show of collaborative works between myself and Instagram friends from all over the world. I like the idea of how people that have never met can be bound together, simply by participating in a real world event. Especially when its something as personal as the sharing of art. Its a simple, but beautiful, gesture that transcends the work itself. The details: What Is required of you: When you receive my portion of the art in the mail, please lmk that it was delivered undamaged. Then all I ask is that you create, freely and brilliantly, in your own way ,and send it back to me in time for the show in April of 2016. So if all the pieces are completed and mailed in early March I would hope that would be enough time for the pieces to arrive even if there is a hold up in customs for overseas participants. What I’m going to do: -I will pay for all the postage. -I will supply the board that we will work on. (A board just seems like it has the best chance of surviving the shipping process) If you need a different surface let me know asap! The shipped board will already have my portion of the art. there are no rules regarding your contribution. -The pieces will be offered for sale during the show, even though collaborations are historically difficult to sell. I still need to know how much money you want to price your portion of the work. If the piece doesn’t sell, I will ship it back to you, as a thank you for participating in the show. I view your participation as a gift, and you will not have to pay for anything….well except your material costs I suppose! :) I am happy to communicate with you over IG but if you prefer e-mail or FB just let me know. You can use this e-mail with any further questions. Please respond with your confirmation, your shipping address, and any additional comments. Thank you, Chet Griffith email: [email protected]

Thank you to Mr. Brandon Minga, who was kind enough to invite me to his Lady Elgin exhibit in Milwaukee. The show was inspired by a victorian era steamboat ship wreck. The Lady Elgin sank between Milwaukee and Chicago. Brandon asked if I had work for the show, but since I really did not have anything specifically water, or nautically themed. I decided to make a new drawing for the exhibit. "Siren's Song" graphite on board 11"x57"
